The Man Who Fainted

A timeless parable about the heart, worldly attachment, and why the remembrance of Allah brings peace only to hearts that long for Him.

There is a powerful story that illustrates a profound spiritual reality.

A tanner (a man who prepared animal skins to make leather) spent every day working with animal skins. Day after day, he lived among their strong, unpleasant smell. Over the years, he became so accustomed to that foul odor that it no longer bothered him.

One day, he happened to walk through a market filled with the fragrance of fine perfumes. The beautiful fragrance, which he had never experienced, was so strong and strange that he fainted on the spot.

People rushed to help him.

They sprinkled rose water over his face, believing its sweet fragrance would revive him.

Instead, it only made his condition worse.

Then someone who understood his situation stepped forward and said,

“Leave him to me.”

He took something dirty and foul-smelling and placed it near the man’s nose.

Immediately, the tanner man opened his eyes, took a deep breath, regained his strength, and ran away from the perfume market as fast as he could.

The Lesson

This is exactly what happens to people who are addicted to this world and whose hearts become deeply attached to it.

Their hearts have become so accustomed to the “foul smell” of worldly desires that the good things feels strange and unbearable.

Instead of finding comfort in good things, the heart feels uneasy.

So they run away from it.

Why Do Some People Run from Good Advice?

Have you ever noticed how some people change the topic the moment death, the grave, or the Hereafter is mentioned?

They find themselves avoiding gatherings where people talk about faith and remind them of their Creator-though it is not truly them, but Satan who whispers and makes them turn away. They feel uncomfortable with discussions about the Hereafter-again, it is Satan who places this heaviness in their hearts.

Our scholars remind us that Shaytan continually whispers, distracting people from that which softens the heart and draws it closer to Allah.

Why does this happen?

A poor and ignorant person, drowned in false illusions about this world, cannot bear to hear anything that challenges his attachment to it.

If you point out its faults and the temporary nature of this world, he becomes defensive.

He makes excuses.

He argues back.

He refuses to admit that anything is wrong.

Excuses replace reflection.

Arguments replace humility.

The heart refuses to admit that it needs healing.

The Greatest Obstacle and the Real Problem

And here is the real problem: if a person does not believe he is sick, how can he ever agree to take medicine?

If he does not admit that his love for the world is a disease, how can he ever turn back to Allah?

He simply will not change.

Without recognizing the illness, there can be no sincere search for the cure.

Think about it.

The Heart That Has Truly Awakened

A heart that longs for the Hereafter finds peace only in the remembrance of Allah.

Its greatest comfort is the remembrance of its Creator.

Allah says in the Noble Qur’an:

“Surely, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.”

— Surah Ar-Ra’d (13:28)

One of the righteous servants of Allah beautifully expressed this reality in his supplication:

“O Master! My soul found life through Your remembrance. Speaking privately with You removed my fear and cooled the heat of my anxieties.”

The Bitter Medicine That Heals

The pains of this world are a gift in disguise.

They are meant to make us turn away from the temporary and fake sweetness of this world and long for the eternal sweetness of the Hereafter.

They gently push us toward Allah, the Most Merciful.

Sometimes the medicine is bitter.

But it heals.

🪞 Pause for a Moment to Reflect

Ask yourself honestly…

Am I like the tanner, running away from the fragrance of Allah’s remembrance because my heart has become too accustomed to this world?

Or…

Am I preparing my heart to recognize—and love—the fragrance that never fades?
